‘Farmhouse’ Rochedale residence

2020
Photography: Christopher Frederick Jones

We were commissioned to build a house, shed and pool on farm land in Rochedale. Our client farmed the site for over 45 years with her family, and developed a strong connection to the land – we undertook this project to enable that connection in the next phase of her life.

The farmhouse has been designed to allow our client to age in place, to experience the land, the path of the sun, the wind and seasonal changes. Considered details include leather wrapped, copper rails that provide support for movement. Lightwells provide natural light from the sun and moon, allowing the internal spaces to change throughout the day and night.

Red brick and spotted gum timber used through the home reflect the history of the site; rich red farming soil and the bushland beyond.
